The Dawn of Reality Capture

with John Brown

When John Brown, Supervisor of Reality Capture for General Motors, recalls lugging around his first scanner that was the size of a refrigerator and needed a generator – you just sense his excitement for what would eventually come.

A self-proclaimed “old-school surveyor,” John Brown’s father was a surveyor, as was his grandfather, so it’s not unfair to say surveying is in his blood. But he felt a magnetic pull to this new, mysterious, exciting device. And it hasn’t waned a bit, catapulting him to a uniquely powerful reality capture role in one of the largest companies on the planet.

But Episode 47 dives much deeper than just tales from General Motors. It’s a reality capture history lesson, an exploration of democratizing valuable information, and a warning of the danger that accompanies dishonesty.
